Artist Thoughts about the Artwork
This work is called Women's Turn, Naisten vuoro. It tells about Finnish Sauna, which is a characteristic national feature of Finland, one which almost any Finn adopts already as a baby. Finland has about 5.5 Million inhabitants, and 3.2 Million saunas!
Sauna is often quite an experience for foreigners coming to Finland. Finnish sauna is heated very hot, 80-110 celcius degrees, and as its best it's warmed up by burning wood. Everyone in the sauna is naked, the young and the old.
Sauna is something that alters us Finns as a people. We might be first shy together with some acquintances of friends of friends, then all go naked to the same sauna and feel very natural. In the old times, we even gave birth in sauna.
So, in personal context, this painting tells about the sauna moments on women's turn along my life: ones in the own cottage with the relatives, and ones in the apartment building of old war nurses on their weekly women's turn, which I had a delight to visit at my grand ma's sister's house. But in greater context, it tells also about someting more. Sauna used to be the place were the (male) leaders all the way to the President Kekkonen made the real decisions. It's Women's Turn now!
